May 1, 2008

Dear Players and Parents,

I hope all soccer families have been well.  I am eager to begin our training in earnest and trust players
have maintained the highest conditioning and technical preparation in the off-season.  I look forward to
building on our tradition of excellence in the classroom, on the field and in the community.  Please read
over this informational letter carefully and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Tryouts:

Tryouts will be August 11th, 12th and 13th.  Detailed tryout information is available on our team website at
www.salinehornetsoccer.net.

All players are to report to the main stadium turf field for check in by 6:30 A.M. on Monday, August 11th.
We will start promptly at 7:00 A.M. sharp – please be on time and budget 10 minutes for check-in.  All
players should bring running shoes, cleats, shin guards and appropriate clothing for the weather. A
physical dated after April 15, 2008, is necessary to tryout in the fall.  I recommend scheduling an
appointment as soon as possible. Physicals will also be offered on Wednesday, May 28th from 6:00 P.M.
– 9:00 P.M. in the Saline high school locker rooms.  NO PLAYER WILL PARTICIPATE IN ANY ACTIVITY
WITHOUT A SIGNED PHYSICAL CONSENT FORM TURNED IN THE MORNING OF TRYOUTS.   If you turn
your physical form in early to the athletic office, I strongly encourage you to make a copy and also bring
that copy to tryouts.

As you know, participating in a high school sport requires a high level of commitment - in and out of
season. Players are expected to work year-round on conditioning and skills.   Remember, it is not enough
to begin your preparation for soccer tryouts in June and expect to be successful in August. I expect you to
be in your best physical condition and technically sharp prior to tryouts. We will again have a very
competitive field of players vying for positions in the program and will play the toughest schedule in the
history of the program. I can always be reached by email or school phone with any tryout or training
questions that you might have.

Tryout Criteria

You will be evaluated for a position in the program by four sets of criteria:

1)Technical Ability:
-First touch on the ball, shooting, finishing, accuracy, intermediate and long range passes, trapping.

2)Tactical Abilty:
-Movement off the ball, defensive and offensive positioning, recognition and understanding of principles
of play

3)Conditioning:
-2 mile time trial (12:30 goal for field players, 13:00 for goal keepers), 40 yd. dash, speed, strength and
agility stations

4)Leadership:
-Positive attitude, work ethic, scholarship in the classroom

*Players that are selected for the varsity team, but do not meet the 12:30 goal, will continue to run the two-
mile time trial each week until they meet this goal.  They will also be ineligible to compete in our pre-
season Hornet Classic scrimmages!  The message: BE IN SHAPE!

Team Camp:

I am thrilled to offer what I consider to be a tremendous opportunity for our players in Saline.  We will
again host a camp in Saline, combining top-notch coaching with team-building opportunities and fun for
our players.  Camp will run from Tuesday, June 10th - Friday, June 13th and will cost $225.  Camp
brochures will be posted on our soccer website by May 4th.  We are very lucky to have many fine coaches
available to run morning technical and tactical sessions.  Our camp is highlighted by former University of
Women’s Coach and World Cup Silver Medalist, Debbie Rademacher.  Former Saline graduate and
current University of Michigan Men’s Soccer player, Cam Cameron, will also serve as a staff coach.
Temple Fitness specialist, Steve Hopkins, will run speed and agility sessions.  Other camp highlights
include: University of Michigan faculty guest lunch speakers; Qdoba and Potbelly’s for lunch; team
showing of the new Indiana Jones movie at Quality 16 Theater; and, the prestigious Lampman Cup 4v4
tournament!   Space will be limited and I encourage players to send their applications in as soon as
possible.  Applications for camp should be mailed to Director of Soccer Operations, Mary Williams, at
5605 Silo Ridge Drive East, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48108 by Friday, May 30th.

Camp is a voluntary opportunity.  No player will ever be penalized for not attending camp; however, it is a
great chance for us to get a jump on the season, so I do hope that all players choose to attend.  Please
feel free to contact me with questions or scheduling concerns.

It is my goal to offer great teaching techniques and team-building opportunities in the most economical
way possible.  I do recognize that this fee might present a hardship for some families.  I hope all players
and families recognize that there is a cost involved with participating in high school sports’ programs.  At
the same time, I do not want monetary issues to stand in the way of any player participating in my camp.
Please contact me if your family might need assistance with payment options.  These conversations will
remain in the utmost confidence and allow me to create training opportunities that all players can take
advantage of in our program.

Summer Conditioning

Summer pickup sessions will be offered by the coaching staff to prepare for the upcoming season.  Pickup
sessions will always include a run, so it is important to bring running shoes each time.  Pickup sessions
are designed to be fun, competitive and essential for strengthening the relationships between players in
the program.  Sessions will be supervised by Coach John LeBlanc, or another graduate assistant coach.  I
understand that all players have busy summer schedules; attendance will never be taken and no player
will ever be graded down at tryouts for not attending these sessions.  However, it is expected that players
will take responsibility for their training and work out on their own if they are unable to attend pickup
sessions.  Coaches are prohibited from working with players more than 15 times before August 1st, and
restricted from working with any players until tryouts once the 15 sessions are completed.  Coaches may
not work with any players in August until tryouts.

All players will be expected to have a base weekly mileage of 20 miles a week coming into tryouts.  One of
the core foundations of our success is superior conditioning and I expect nothing less from every player in
this program.  Daily pushups, situps and other core fitness drills accompanied by 15 minutes of Coerver
footwork drills 3-4 times per week from May until the start of tryouts is the expectation.  Basketball and
frisbee football are also great activities to supplement your training.  In addition, posted on the soccer web
site are speed and agility drills from fitness specialist, Steve Hopkins, of Temple Fitness.

Traverse City Trip:

Again, the JV and Varsity teams will travel to Traverse City to play TC West this fall.  Varsity and Junior
Varsity teams will leave Friday, October 3rd at 6:30 A.M. and return late afternoon on Sunday, October
5th. We will compete Friday night, and have team building activities and sightseeing on Saturday. We will
stay at The Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City (http://tc.greatwolflodge.com). The cost to players for the
trip is projected to be about $90 (included in season total). Other costs will be covered with a can and
bottle drive this summer. We have an additional number of rooms on hold for families who wish to join us.
These are family suites that sleep up to 6, and the rate for each night is $164 plus tax (includes waterpark
passes, based on 4 in room, additional guests $15 each). If you are tentatively interested please email
hornetsoccer@comcast.net by May 30th so we can notify the hotel. We will also be in need of parent
drivers and chaperones for the trip.

Portage Northern Tournament

The Varsity team will take on some of the best competition in the state at the Portage Northern
Tournament on Saturday, August 23rd.  We will leave at 6:00 A.M. that morning and return early evening.
The team will play three one hour games.  Transportation has yet to be determined.

Finances:

I realize that the cost of participating in a high school sport is growing. We do our best to keep expenses
down while providing a quality experience for your son. Once again, we will have an all-inclusive season
fee that will cover everything from player uniforms to the banquet.  Last year, varsity players paid $435;
this year our fee will be $400.  This includes uniforms, program fees, Traverse City Trip and activities, and
our team book.  The varsity team will purchase uniforms this year and use the same uniforms through the
2010 season. The fee will be $300 for junior varsity (down from $330 last year) and $150 for freshmen
(down from $165 last year). You will receive a breakdown of all expenses at the parent meeting on August
14th. Half of the fee is due at this meeting and the other half by September 15th.  I hope this information
will help you plan.

This year, I expect players to save money over the summer to contribute $10 to the cost of their banquet.
I also expect any extra warm-up items that teams would like to purchase also be funded by players.  I want
players to take ownership and responsibility and earn their own money.  Players might want to budget
saving $40 from their summer jobs.  Alex Andrews of SASA is looking for assistance with some of his
summer camps and would be able to offer some players work.  Alex can be reached at
alexandrews@salinesoccer.org.

The school district covers the head coach’s salary, transportation, referee fees and facility support for
each team. All other expenses such as assistant coach salaries, team activities and equipment are
covered by parent support and fundraising. I appreciate your willingness to contribute to a well-rounded
experience for our teams, and to support the extras that make the Saline Soccer program so special.

The Athletic Department will again institute a pay-to-play fee for all athletes and is not part of the soccer
fee.  We expect this fee to be $125.  Please plan to budget this into your participation costs, also.

Staff:

Our wonderful JV coaches, Ian and Sean Sturms, will return to their positions after a one year absence.
John LeBlanc will serve as Varsity assistant coach.  Steve Zampardo will serve as the Freshman coach.
All coaches’ contact information can be found on our soccer website.
